The past future of EuropeCultural sciences’ analysis of demographic prognosis and knowledge orders in the 20th and 21st centuryWhat is Europe ? Where are the European frontiers ? Which are its social and cultural dispositions ? And above all: which demographic constructions define Europe ? In what way and to what extent do demographic prognosis shape European concepts ? Which social orders of knowledge are determined ? The project examines these questions in a transdisciplinary perspective, with a focus on the analysis of (historical) future knowledge on a “Europe of populations” in the 20th and 21st century. The research project points out processes and realities of demographic sciences, policies and representations which moulded and changed the self-conception of national states, politics, sciences and society. The subprojects refer to the historical dimensions, disruptions and continuities of today’s controversial debates on demographic issues. The project deals with the correlation of demographic development and military debates, of apocalyptic discourses on shrinking populations and utopian visions of demography, and finally of the constitution of “western”, “eastern” and “European” population policies and the historicisation of knowledge societies. |
